At some point during my eBay-binging years in the early to late 2000s, I acquired a Sony FD Mavica MVC-FD75 Digital Still Camera. Released in the 1990s, the Mavica MVC-FD75 is a digital camera that saves photos by writing JPEGs directly onto a 3.5" floppy disk, which slides snugly into the camera’s body. Despite my initial excitement, it was not immediately clear what I should do with it. So it sat around my studio—first in Brooklyn, New York, and later in Stavanger, Norway, where I now live.

Stavanger, on Norway’s southwest coast, is one of the windiest places in Europe thanks to its proximity to the North Sea. The weather shifts constantly: it might be sunny one minute, hailing sideways six minutes later, and back to sun three minutes after that. Out of this ever-changing sky, my quest to figure out what to do with the Mavica, and some good old-fashioned boredom, a game emerged over the past year: whenever I spotted a skyscape worth capturing, I would drop whatever I was doing, find the camera (sometimes by running home), and take a picture from my terrace. Eventually I filled up the floppy, but I kept playing with an added twist: first (often in a mild panic) I would use the viewfinder to scroll through earlier shots, delete one, and then take a new pic. I kept playing this just-in-time, on-the-spot shooting-and-editing game right up to the launch of this edition.

This edition consists of an ISO filesystem image of the 3.5" floppy I used. The image contains 36 cloudscape JPEGs. Every photo was taken on the Mavica from my terrace in East Stavanger over the past year. For the forensic specialists: MY_PHOTO is the default Mavica title for its disk, and the the internal camera battery is dead, so the timestamps are a quarter century off. Enjoy!
